FAQs

  • Also known as shinrin-yoku, Nature Therapy and Eco-Therapy…all are essentially the same thing, derived from the same principals and research.

Shinrin- Yoku or Forest Bathing emerged in the 1980s when the Japanese government noticed an increase in illnesses in their population as the culture was shifting towards a more tech centered world. Long work hours spent in cubicles staring at computer screens in crowded cities was taking a toll. They set out to study the benefits of returning to nature as a way to improve health.

Researchers discovered that plants, especially trees, released essential chemicals called phytoncides that serve as a natural defense against fungus and bacteria. When humans breathe in and absorb these phytoncides through the skin while “bathing” or immersing ourselves in the forest, we also benefit.

The findings showed improved immunity, lower blood pressure, lower stress, better sleep, and improved mental health.

I am certified as a Forest Therapy guide. Forest Therapy expands on the 40 plus years of research in Shinrin - Yoku by offering a slightly different approach. Instead of a goal oriented, clinical approach, Forest Therapy seeks to explore a relationship with nature using our senses through open invitations from a certified guide. These sensory experiences open new pathways for improved personal health, improved human relationships, and deeper connection with the natural world.

  • While this experience does not involve “bathing” in the conventional sense, some invitations may include interacting water, but complete immersion in water is not part of the practice.

  • The benefits of the Forest Bathing have been extensively recorded, and it is well known and accepted that this type of activity delivers long-lasting positive effects on your overall health and well-being.

  • Sessions are approximately 2 hours duration.

Your time will be spent engaging in guided invitations.

  • A forest bathing walk can be done anywhere there is nature. We also offer unique online/ remote experiences. In person walks are generally done at a location or trail that your Forest Therapy guide has carefully selected in your area. These walk sites meet certain natural, ecological, safety, and accessibility standards for a leisurely experience with few physical demands.

Comfortable outdoor clothes that are weather appropriate work best.

This is not bathing in the literal sense, so no swim suite required.

Comfortable walking or hiking shoes are recommended.

Please take into consideration wet, muddy, or slippery conditions. You also might want shoes that can easily be taken on and off as some invitations might call you to do so. It is not uncommon for people to wear sturdy hiking sandals in summer months.

For further comfort, you might bring or apply bug spray and/or sun screen as we will be outside and in a wooded area for some time.

Additionally, drinking water is recommended. Some participants bring a journal and writing pen. Cell phones are optional. Phones will be asked to be set to silent mode should you choose to bring one.

You may want to bring a portable seat cushion, table cloth, towel, or ground cover up if you do not like sitting directly on grass, logs, rocks, or soil. Please note that you will be responsible for carrying any items that you decide to bring on the walk. Finally, A small backpack for personal items is encouraged.
